The Project
The overall project was for a new and important sculpture trail to be introduced at Bosworth Battlefield. A total of 4 artworks were to be added along the existing trail to link the locations together and allow visitors to walk and follow along a historical story of the land, rather than just walking from field to field.
This particular art piece, entitled Piecing Together The Past was the first artwork of the 1485 Sculpture Trail and can be found in the courtyard of the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre. The piece was designed by Stephen Broadbent Studios and is in the form of a double-sided coin, with Richard III on one side and Henry VII on the other. The coins are represented in the form of a partly completed jigsaw, suggesting how little we really know of the true history of the period and the incomplete picture we have of what happened on Bosworth Battlefield on the 22nd August 1485.
The process
This project spanned an intensive seven-month manufacturing process, involving a series of intricate and carefully coordinated steps to achieve a flawless final result. Our team began by 3D scanning the master pattern, ensuring an accurate digital representation of the original design. From this, a detailed CAD model was developed to guarantee the precise replication of the piece.
The next step was to create a silicone skin mould, which served as the basis for open casting with polyurethane (PU) resin. In total, the project required 350 kilograms of resin, reflecting the scale and complexity of this project.
Once the cast was complete, it was taken to our CNC department for machining to exact the dimensions and add any fine details. This step of the process is essential to adhere to the strict tolerances required for seamless assembly and aesthetic perfection.
The final stages of production focused on the finishing touches to make sure the piece was exactly as the designer envisioned. Our team hand-finished and lacquered the art piece, leaving a smooth surface and ensuring its durability. A particularly distinctive feature of the project was the hand-painting of the jigsaw elements by artists, Stephen and Peter. Their craftsmanship ensured that the finished piece was not only technically precise but also visually captivating, and added character to the overall design.
