PREPARING YOUR PRODUCT
By enhancing its visual effect, feel, durability, and corrosion resistance, our finishing processes ready your products for their application. Aligning material choice and finishing technique is essential to this, ensuring your product is suitable for indoor or outdoor environments, demanding settings, and more.
We offer sanding, polishing, lacquering, and painting as a part of our finishing operations, all carried out to the international standard, ISO 9001:2015.
Surface Finishing
Processes
SANDING
Medium sandpaper, usually 180, 240 or 400 grit, is used to sand down the edges of surfaces to ensure they are smooth.
Our cut, cast, and machined parts will all benefit from having rough edges and cutter marks removed from the surface of the material with sanding operations.
POLISHING
Polishing is achieved with finer grades of sandpaper, producing a smoother finish on parts where required for your project.
For resin parts, we can achieve a super smooth finishing, polishing to 4000 grit. This can then be lacquered to coat the part with a glossy shine.
LACQUERING
We offer glossy, matte, and satin – plus more variants – as part of our lacquering service.
Lacquering is the application of a clear or tinted coating to the surface of a part. Each lacquer we offer provides a unique look and surface texture to meet a wide range of requirements and preferences.
PAINTING
Penta Pattern & Model is equipped with a number of paints and other chemical coating agents to improve the surface of your product.
Whether helping to protect from corrosion, enhancing the visual appeal of the product, or controlling reactions to another material, painting and chemical coating can refine your product function.
Surface Finishing FAQ
What Are the Types of Surface Finishing for Different Materials?
Understanding how different types of surface finishes apply to various materials is key to achieving the right look, performance, and durability. Below are commonly asked questions that address the finishing process and techniques used for wood, metal, plastic, print, and painted surfaces.
Wood surfaces vary in how they absorb or react to finish types. The right surface finish can protect against wear, moisture, and enhance grain detail.
- Oil-based finishes (e.g. linseed or tung oil): Penetrate deep into the wood grain, enriching its natural surface texture and adding warmth.
- Lacquer: A hard, glossy finish ideal for furniture and cabinetry—fast-drying and durable.
- Water-based finishes: Offer low odour and lower VOCs, making them suitable for indoor use.
- Shellac: A traditional finish with a warm tone; however, it has limited moisture resistance.
- Varnish: Clear and protective; enhances grain and resists moderate wear.
- Polyurethane: Extremely durable and moisture-resistant—commonly used in flooring and kitchen surfaces.
- Stains and dyes: Modify colour; stains enhance wood texture, while dyes provide more uniform colouring.
These finishing techniques are often chosen based on the desired surface roughness, colour vibrancy, and exposure conditions.
