Bronze Casting

A number of bronze sculptures that we have worked on are proudly displayed throughout the UK and overseas.

Penta Pattern & Model Ltd welcomes projects from large commissions to finer sculptures, collaborating with artists to produce high-quality and beautifully nuanced bronze sculptures.

With a shared passion for bringing creative concepts to life, we form lasting relationships with the artists commissioned for these pieces. Penta Pattern & Model specialises in the production of patterns for bronze castings, but can support artists throughout the process, from development work to assembly, ensuring the final piece is an exact replica of the approved design.

Using time-old techniques including lost wax casting, casting is an established way of creating bronze sculptures that survive the test of time. Penta Pattern & Model’s pattern making service for bronze casting is trusted by artists and sculptors on a global scale to bring their work to life.

WORKING WITH BRONZE

For stunning, high strength structures where the finest details can be incorporated, bronze is the preferred material for many artists.

There are many advantages to working with bronze. Bronze not only provides a romantic, timeless feel but weathers well, ensuring statues will retain their integrity and gravitas for time to come in both indoor and outdoor environments.

What is the BRONZE CASTING PROCESS

MOULD & WAX

To begin the lost wax casting process, a mould is created of the original sculpture. This forms an exact negative image of the sculpture, into which wax is then poured.

The wax is fitted with sprues that allow for molten bronze to be poured in at the casting stage.

CERAMIC

Once hardened, the wax is removed from the mould and any imperfections to the image corrected.

The wax is covered in layers of ceramic shell to make a strong investment, incorporating additional support such as pins and wires if required.

CASTING

The next step is to fire the ceramic shell.

This process melts the wax, creating negative space into which molten bronze can be poured. Thanks to the exact nature of the wax positive image, a high-quality bronze component and surface finish can be achieved.

CHASING

Once cool, the ceramic shell is broken away and any sprues and metal wires removed, revealing the bronze sculpture underneath.

The sculpture is then finished through tooling and may require further assembly processes, for a flawless bronze replica of the original sculpture.

FINISHING

Final touches such as patina effects are applied to the bronze to enhance the surface colour.

The bronze casting process is complete.

While it is possible to cast bronze at home, it is advisable to start with a professional instructor in a well-equipped casting studio. Bronze casting involves advanced equipment, which can be costly and complex to set up. The safest and most affordable way to learn is by taking a public class. Once you have gained experience and a strong understanding of the tools and processes involved, you can consider setting up a home studio.
